January is one of the best months of the year for weather on the south and east coasts: dry, sunny and a little less hot than the rest of the year, with clean beaches and calm Caribbean water. Prices stay at their holiday peak until about January 3, then ease noticeably for the rest of the month, though it is still high season. From mid-January the humpback whales arrive in Samaná Bay, and late January brings the winter baseball final.

The trade-offs: the north coast and Samaná are still in their showery season, nights in the mountains get properly cold, and if whales are your main reason to come, late January is good while mid-February is better. For the full calendar, see When to go.

Weather by region

January is the coolest month on the coast, which still means beach weather: highs in the mid 80s°F (about 29°C) and comfortable nights. The air is drier on the Caribbean side, and showers in Punta Cana are short. The Atlantic shore gets more cloud and drizzle when cold fronts stall.

The sea is around 80°F (27°C), a touch cooler than in summer and still easy swimming. On clear nights Constanza drops into the 40s°F (single digits °C), and the Valle Nuevo plateau above it can see frost. Samaná follows the north coast pattern, with sunny spells broken by rainy days, and the mouth of the bay can be choppy on whale trips.

Hurricane season ended on November 30, and December through March is usually the cleanest stretch of the year for sargassum on every coast. If you have avoided the east coast in summer because of seaweed, this is the time to go.

Watch out

The January breeze makes the sun feel gentler than it is. Americans flying in from snow burn fast on the first afternoon. Use reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and shade from 11 am to 3 pm, and see Health.

Whale season starts in Samaná

Every winter, North Atlantic humpbacks come to the warm, shallow waters of Samaná Bay and the offshore banks to mate and calve. The Ministry of Environment sets the official season each year: in 2026 it ran from January 15 to March 31 and the boats went out from January 16. The 2027 dates had not been announced by late October 2026, but the season has opened in mid-January for years, so plan on that and confirm before you book.

Late January is a good time to go but not the very best. Whale numbers build through the month and usually peak from mid-February to early March, when competition groups of males chase females and mothers rest with calves. In the first week or two of the season, sightings are likely but less certain, and some days the whales stay far out. If you can only come in January, aim for the last ten days and book two trips.

  • Trips leave from the Samaná town waterfront, last about 3 to 4 hours and cost roughly $60–75 per person with established operators, often with a Cayo Levantado beach stop.
  • Day packages from Punta Cana cost about $150–200 or more and mean 7 to 8 hours in a van. A night or two in Samaná is far better.
  • Use a boat with a current Ministry of Environment permit, life jackets and a guide. Swimming with whales is not allowed in the bay.
  • Take seasickness medication an hour before boarding and bring a windbreaker.

For in-water encounters, permitted liveaboard boats run week-long trips to the Silver Bank from Puerto Plata, and spaces sell out a year or more ahead. Rooms in Samaná and Las Terrenas for February book up early too, so January is easier to arrange at short notice. See Samaná and Excursions.

What's on in January 2027

Winter baseball: round robin and final

After the LIDOM regular season ends on December 22, 2026, the top four teams play an 18-game round robin, and the top two meet in a best-of-seven final. Last season the round robin ran from December 27 to mid-January and the final from January 21 to 27. The 2026–27 dates had not been published when we checked, so expect the round robin in the first half of January and the final in the second half. Final tickets are the hardest to get in Dominican sports, especially when Licey or the Águilas are playing; buy from the team's official channel as soon as the matchup is set, and follow lidom.com.

The champion goes on to the Caribbean Series in Hermosillo, Mexico, from February 1 to 7, 2027. If you cannot get a ticket to a final game, watch it at a colmado (corner store) or a sports bar, where the atmosphere is close to the stadium's. See Baseball.

Carnival gets ready

Dominican Carnival is a February event. The parades run every Sunday in February, starting on February 7, 2027, and peak around Independence Day on Saturday, February 27. In late January, carnival groups in La Vega, Santiago and other towns are finishing masks and costumes, and some hold launch events; ask locally if you are in the Cibao at the end of the month. The national parade on Santo Domingo's Malecón has no 2027 date yet. See Festivals.

Other January events

  • Kite and surf season in Cabarete: winter trade winds are among the most reliable of the year from December to March, and Playa Encuentro has its winter swells.
  • Golf high season at Casa de Campo and Punta Cana: book tee times 2 to 3 months ahead. See Golf.
  • Pico Duarte: January is inside the drier hiking season, with freezing nights at the summit. See Jarabacoa and Constanza.

Holidays and closures

DateHolidayWhat it means for you
Fri, Jan 1New Year's DayFixed public holiday; a quiet, closed-up day outside resorts
Wed, Jan 6 (likely observed Mon, Jan 4)Día de Reyes (Three Kings Day)Children get their gifts on the 6th; the day off likely moves to Monday
Thu, Jan 21Our Lady of AltagraciaFixed public holiday; huge pilgrimage to Higüey
Tue, Jan 26 (may be observed Mon, Jan 25)Duarte DayBirthday of founding father Juan Pablo Duarte; check the official date

Under Law 139-97, holidays that fall on a Tuesday or Wednesday normally move to the Monday before. That puts Three Kings Day on Monday, January 4, as in 2026, when it moved from Tuesday, January 6, to Monday, January 5. Duarte Day is also movable: in 2023, when January 26 fell on a Thursday, the Ministry of Labor moved it to Monday, January 30, so a Monday, January 25 observance is likely in 2027. The Ministry publishes the official list, and sometimes makes exceptions, so check mt.gob.do before you plan around either date. On these days, banks and government offices close; resorts, restaurants, shops and tours run as normal.

Altagracia: the pilgrimage to Higüey

January 21 honors the Virgin of Altagracia, the country's patron, and it is a fixed holiday that never moves. Pilgrims arrive at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Higüey through the night of January 20, and masses run from before dawn. The modernist basilica, about 45 minutes inland from Punta Cana, is a remarkable sight on the day. Dress modestly, go early and expect serious crowds.

Watch out

Roads around Higüey jam on January 20 and 21, and that traffic spills onto the routes between Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. If an airport transfer or a drive to the capital falls on those days, leave extra time.

Crowds and prices

The first days of January belong to the holiday peak, which runs from about December 18 to January 3. Resorts are full, and the return flights on Saturday, January 2, and Sunday, January 3, are among the hardest seats of the winter. Then the US school break ends, the Dominican diaspora flies back north, and rates drop.

That drop is real, but it is relative. January is still high season, because the weather is excellent and Canadians and Europeans fill the resorts all winter. The weeks from about January 4 to early February are the best-value stretch of the dry season, before Presidents' Day week in mid-February and the spring breaks of March. Watch two long weekends: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 18) brings a bump of Americans, and Dominican holiday weekends fill the beaches near the capital, Las Terrenas and the mountains.

Save money

Search a check-in date of January 9 or 10 against one of January 2 or 3: the same resort and room usually costs noticeably less once the holiday ends. Pair it with a midweek flight, and see Flights for nonstops, including the new Breeze service from Pittsburgh and Columbus planned for January 2027.

Whale-season hotels on the Samaná Peninsula are the exception: they get busier as January goes on, and rooms for February book up by the fall. If you want a specific small hotel in Las Terrenas or Las Galeras in late January, book now.

Northeast · Go after mid-month

Whales from mid-January, Los Haitises and Playa Rincón. Pack for showers. See Las Terrenas and Las Galeras.

Santo Domingo

Capital · Excellent

Ideal walking weather in the Zona Colonial, plus the round robin and possibly the final at the Quisqueya. See Santo Domingo.

A sample January week

Whales, the capital and the baseball final, flying in and out of Santo Domingo, for the last week of January when the whales are settling in and the final is likely on.

  1. Day 1

    Santo Domingo

Land at SDQ, check into the Zona Colonial and walk Calle El Conde to Parque Colón.

  2. Day 2

    Colonial city and the final

The cathedral, the Alcázar de Colón and the Fortaleza Ozama. If a final game is at the Quisqueya, go; if not, watch it at a colmado with locals.

  3. Day 3

    To Samaná

About 2 hours 30 minutes on the toll highway, with cash pesos for three booths. Afternoon on the town's waterfront and pescado con coco (fish in coconut sauce) for dinner.

  4. Day 4

    Whales and Cayo Levantado

Morning whale trip with a permitted operator, then the beach on Cayo Levantado.

  5. Day 5

    Los Haitises

Boat across the bay to the mangroves, seabird islets and Taíno cave art.

  6. Day 6

Second whale trip, then Las Terrenas

A second morning on the water raises your odds a lot. Then drive about 40 to 50 minutes over the hills to Las Terrenas.

  7. Day 7

    El Limón and home

Morning at the El Limón waterfall, then about 2 hours 30 minutes back to SDQ for an evening flight.

Short on time and staying in Punta Cana? Spend a night in Samaná rather than doing the whale trip as a day tour. See Plan your trip for longer routes.

Getting around in January

  • Holiday returns. January 2 and 3 are heavy travel days at PUJ, SDQ and STI. Arrive 3 hours before US flights.
  • Long weekends. If Three Kings Day and Duarte Day move to Mondays as expected, January 1–4 (four days, with New Year's Day on the Friday) and January 23–25 are long weekends, with traffic out of Santo Domingo on the Friday or Saturday and back on the Monday.
  • The Samaná highway. Three toll booths, about RD$500 (about $8) each way for a car in early 2026, cash only. Plan to arrive before dark. See Driving.
  • Time zone. The DR stays one hour ahead of New York until the US moves its clocks forward on March 14, 2027.
  • Safety. The State Department rates the country Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime. Use permitted boats, Uber or hotel taxis at night, and keep valuables out of sight at crowded games. See Safety.

Bottom line

Go in January if you want dry, sunny beach weather on the east or south coast at lower prices than Christmas, a first look at the whales from mid-month, or the biggest baseball games of the Dominican season. Couples and anyone without school-age children get the best of it from about January 9 onward.

Pick another month if whales are the whole point (mid-February to early March is better), if you want the north coast's beaches at their best, or if Carnival is on your list (February). See December for Christmas and November for the cheapest weeks, and the Punta Cana vs Cancún comparison if you are still choosing a destination.
