Five days in Banff gives you Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon, the gondola and hot springs, Yoho's Emerald Lake and a morning on the Icefields Parkway at an unhurried pace, as long as you sleep in Banff town and grab a Parks Canada shuttle seat when they go on sale in mid-April. Three days covers the core. The plan below suits first-timers between mid-June and early October; skiers and winter visitors should jump to the winter version, since Moraine Lake is closed from mid-October to June.

The trip works best in this order: flights and rooms first, then the shuttle, then everything else. Want the bigger picture of the park, Jasper and Kootenay first? See the Canadian Rockies and Banff vs Jasper.

The plan, day by day

This is the summer and early fall version, from mid-June (when Moraine Lake has thawed and its shuttle runs) to the shuttle's last day around Canadian Thanksgiving. With 3 days, do Days 1 to 3. With 4, add Day 4. With 5, add Day 5. Drive times assume no traffic jams for wildlife, which is optimistic in July.

  1. Day 1

Calgary to Banff, hot springs at night

Morning: land at Calgary (YYC) by early afternoon if you can. Banff is 90 miles (145 km) and about 1 hour 30 minutes by car, or about 2 hours on the Banff Airporter. Buy your park pass online before you leave home, or at the gate on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of town.

Afternoon: check in, then walk Banff Avenue to the Bow River bridge and follow the river path to Bow Falls, about 20 minutes on foot. The Fairmont Banff Springs, the 1888 railway castle hotel, sits above the falls and anyone can wander its public areas.

Evening: ride Roam Route 1 (C$2, about $1.40) up Sulphur Mountain to the Banff Upper Hot Springs, C$19.75 (about $14) per adult. It is calmest late in the evening. Eat on Banff Avenue or the side streets around Bear Street and Caribou Street, where you can choose anything from pub food to fondue.

  2. Day 2

    Moraine Lake and Lake Louise

Morning: leave Banff by about 7 am and drive 40 minutes to the Lake Louise Park and Ride at the ski resort, where parking is free for shuttle riders. Take your booked shuttle to Moraine Lake first. Climb the Rockpile, a 10-minute walk, for the classic view of the Valley of the Ten Peaks, then walk the flat lakeshore trail. Without a car, Roam's Route 8X runs from Banff to Lake Louise for C$12.50 (about $9) one way.

Afternoon: ride the Lake Connector bus, included with your shuttle ticket, to Lake Louise. Hike to the Lake Agnes Tea House, 2.1 miles (3.4 km) each way with about 1,260 ft (385 m) of climbing; allow about 3 hours round trip with a stop. If your legs are done, walk the lakeshore toward the glacier instead.

Evening: the last shuttle back to the Park and Ride left at 7:30 pm in 2026. Eat in Lake Louise village, which has a handful of restaurants and a small mall, or back in Banff.

  3. Day 3

Johnston Canyon, Lake Minnewanka and the gondola

Morning: be at Johnston Canyon on the Bow Valley Parkway by 8 am, about 30 minutes from town; the lot fills by 9 am in summer. Roam Route 9 runs there in season for C$5 (about $3.50). Catwalks lead about 0.7 mile (1.1 km) to the Lower Falls and 1.6 miles (2.6 km) to the Upper Falls; allow 2 to 3 hours.

Afternoon: drive the 10 minutes from town to Lake Minnewanka and Two Jack Lake, the best picnic stop near Banff. Bighorn sheep often stand on the road here. In summer a sightseeing cruise runs on Lake Minnewanka.

Evening: ride the Banff Gondola late in the day for the golden light, then walk the summit boardwalk to Sanson's Peak. Prices change by date and time, so book online; kids 5 and under ride free. Finish at Vermilion Lakes Drive for sunset over Mount Rundle.

  4. Day 4

Yoho: Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls

Morning: drive about an hour west via Lake Louise into British Columbia (still Mountain Time). Walk the flat 3.2-mile (5.2 km) loop around Emerald Lake before the small lot fills mid-morning, stopping at the Natural Bridge on the way in.

Afternoon: Takakkaw Falls drops about 1,220 ft (373 m), 10 minutes' walk from its parking lot, but the road opens only from late June to early October and its switchbacks cannot take long RVs. Stop at the Spiral Tunnels viewpoint to watch freight trains loop inside the mountain.

Evening: eat in the railway village of Field or back in Lake Louise. If you won the Lake O'Hara draw in March, spend this day there instead.

  5. Day 5

    The Icefields Parkway, then home

Morning: if your flight is in the evening, drive north from Lake Louise on Highway 93. Bow Lake is 22 miles (36 km) up the road and the Peyto Lake viewpoint is near Bow Summit a few minutes beyond; arrive before 9 am to beat the tour buses. Fill your tank in Lake Louise first: there is almost no cell service and the only gas is the seasonal station at Saskatchewan Crossing.

Afternoon: turn back by early afternoon. From Bow Lake it is about 2 hours 45 minutes to the Calgary airport without stops. On a morning flight, spend the last hours in Canmore instead, 20 minutes east of Banff.

Evening: at YYC you clear US customs before you board (US preclearance), so leave at least 2 hours, more on holiday weekends.

Insider tip

Swap Days 2 and 3 if the weather calls for it. Moraine Lake under low cloud is a gray pond, while Johnston Canyon is fine in drizzle. Shuttle tickets have a set date, so check the cancellation terms when you book.

Watch out

8 am Mountain Time is 10 am in New York and 7 am in Los Angeles. Log in to your Parks Canada account a few minutes early, and book the morning Moraine Lake slot first; those go fastest. Only Parks Canada, Roam and licensed tour companies can drive Moraine Lake Road, so skip any tour seller that cannot show a Parks Canada business licence.

What it costs

Room rates are for two people per night, before tax; Alberta adds 5% GST and a 6% tourism levy, and many Banff hotels add their own fee on top. Daily spending is per person and excludes the room. The guide's money page has the full breakdown; our budget tool adds up your own trip.

Save money

Two or more adults in one car should always buy the C$24.50 family/group pass, which covers up to seven people. If you stay seven days or come back within a year, the C$167.50 family Discovery Pass pays for itself. Kids 12 and under ride Roam free, and everyone 17 and under enters the park free.

Where to stay for this itinerary

For a 3 to 5 day trip, sleep in Banff town for all nights if you are without a car: the Roam buses, the airport shuttles and most restaurants start there. With a car, Canmore is often noticeably cheaper for the same quality and adds only 20 minutes each way. If you can afford one splurge night, make it Lake Louise the night before the lakes, so you can be at the shore at dawn.

Our where to stay in Banff page compares each area, from the Banff Avenue core and Tunnel Mountain to Lake Louise village and Canmore, with prices by season and the hotel fees to expect.

From the Calgary airport

  • Rental car: the simplest choice for Yoho and the parkway. The Trans-Canada is 110 km/h (68 mph) to the park gate and 90 km/h (56 mph) inside the park. From November, ask for winter tires when you book; see driving in Canada.
  • Banff Airporter: door to door from YYC with a stop in Canmore, about 2 hours, more than a dozen departures a day.
  • Brewster Express: runs from the airport and downtown Calgary to Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise all year.
  • Arriving late: after an evening landing, sleep near the airport and drive west in the morning, when the Bow Valley views are worth seeing. See Calgary and Alberta and flights for nonstops from US cities.

The winter version, November to April

Winter Banff is a different trip, and a good one. Moraine Lake Road is shut, the Lake Louise shuttles do not run, and part of the Minnewanka Loop closes to cars from November to May, but the ski resorts open (Lake Louise opened early on November 1, 2026, and Sunshine and Norquay open November 6), Lake Louise freezes into a skating rink, and the hot springs steam all winter. Expect December highs around 25°F (-4°C) and lows near 7°F (-14°C), with sunset around 4:30 pm at the solstice.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive, then the hot springs

Fly into Calgary and take the Airporter or a car with winter tires. Walk Banff Avenue in the early dark, then soak at the Upper Hot Springs. From November 12 to February 7, the Hot Chocolate Trail runs around Banff and Lake Louise.

  2. Day 2

    Ski or ice walk

Ski Sunshine or Lake Louise on a SkiBig3 ticket (lifts run 9:30 am to 4:30 pm), or take Roam Route 9 to Johnston Canyon, which returns for winter on November 30, and walk the frozen catwalks in ice cleats. Guided ice walks from town include transport and cleats.

  3. Day 3

    Lake Louise on ice

Skate on the cleared rink in front of the Fairmont Chateau once the lake freezes, snowshoe the lakeshore, and warm up in the village. A winter-only Roam service links the village and the lakeshore, cash only on the bus. Ice Magic brings ice carving to Lake Louise from February 3 to 7, 2027.

  4. Day 4

    Gondola and Norquay

Ride the gondola on a clear morning, then ski a half day at Norquay, 10 minutes above town. Drive out to Lake Minnewanka and back the way you came, since the loop is partly closed.

  5. Day 5

    Canmore and home

Snowshoe or cross-country ski at the Canmore Nordic Centre, lunch in Canmore, then 1 hour 15 minutes to the airport.

Watch out

From November 1 to March 31, winter tires or chains are required on the Icefields Parkway, which has no gas, food or cell signal for most of its length and closes for avalanche control. In winter, skip Day 5's parkway drive unless you are an experienced winter driver with a flexible day. Banff's SnowDays festival runs January 21 to February 7, 2027; Christmas to New Year's is the priciest week of the year. See winter in Canada, December and January.

Variations: kids, rain, a slower trip

With kids

Children 17 and under enter the park free, kids 12 and under ride Roam free, and the hot springs sell a C$64.25 (about $46) family ticket. Trade the Lake Agnes climb for the Lake Louise lakeshore, and Johnston Canyon's Upper Falls for the Lower Falls. The gondola is free for kids 5 and under and suits all ages.

On a rainy day

Go to the hot springs anyway; rain on a hot pool is part of the fun. Then visit the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, where Canada's national parks began, or the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies on Bear Street for mountain art and history; check their hours before you go. Johnston Canyon works in light rain. Save Moraine Lake for the clearest morning.

A slower version

With five nights, sleep two in Banff, one at Lake Louise and two in Canmore. Spend the extra time on a longer hike (the Plain of Six Glaciers, about 3.3 miles or 5.3 km each way from Lake Louise), a half day in Kootenay along Highway 93 South to Marble Canyon and the Paint Pots, or Kananaskis Country, where parked cars need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass from Alberta Parks.

Adding Jasper

Not in 3 to 5 days. Lake Louise to Jasper is 144 miles (232 km) and about 3.5 hours without stops, and the parkway deserves a full day. With 7 days or more, follow the 7-day plan on our Rockies page and read Banff vs Jasper.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Turning up without a shuttle seat. You cannot drive to Moraine Lake, and Lake Louise parking costs C$42 (about $30) a day from mid-May to mid-October and often fills before 8 am.
  • Planning May for turquoise lakes. Lake Louise usually thaws in early June and Moraine Lake by mid-June.
  • Arriving at trailheads at 10 am. Johnston Canyon, Emerald Lake and Peyto Lake are calm before 9 am and packed by late morning.
  • Packing bear spray. You cannot fly with it. Buy or rent it in Calgary, Canmore or Banff, and carry it on every trail; see outdoors.
  • Stopping in the lane for wildlife. Pull fully off the road or keep driving. Stay at least 100 ft (30 m) from elk and sheep and 330 ft (100 m) from bears; see safety.
  • Forgetting the Bow Valley Parkway night closure. From March 1 to June 25, the 11-mile (17 km) stretch east of Johnston Canyon is closed to all travel from 8 pm to 8 am to protect wildlife.
  • Trusting old guides. Shuttle rules, fees and closures change every season. Check the Parks Canada site the week you go.

Bottom line

Three days in Banff gets you the lakes, the canyon and the town; five lets you add Yoho and the parkway without rushing. Book your room and car now for next summer, put April 15 (or the 2027 equivalent) in your calendar for the shuttle, and pick your base on where to stay in Banff. Coming this winter instead?
